Pathway Sketchbook Pages.

These pages are also from my pathway sketchbook, but they show a more photographic side to the project. The first page demontrates darkroom development and the next pages shows my final costume and initial plans for my final shoots.

Pathway Sketchbook Pages.

These pages show exploration into ideas behind character concepts. This character was for my 'Keeper Of Memories'. I created moodboards to generate ideas for the character, wrote a back story, and produced small samples. The next page shows further development into costume design and personal, photographic memories.

Exploratory Sketchbook Pages.

I decided to show these two pages as they show development in studies, refferencing artists, and in depth exploration of colour.

Senescence of the Spectrum.

The Woodland Fauna series was the last shoot I did with my best friend, but the first time we decided to shoot in film. The film I used was expired by about 2 years which I'm guessing is the reason why the colours of these images look almost cross processed.  I was surprised that I managed to get some good looking images! This is a shoot I had done in my own time and shooting film is something I've really enjoyed working with.

Woodland Fauna.

Before my friend went back to Swansea, I decided to do a final shoot with her, which again was very improvised. I wanted the images to be simple and innocent in appearance, therefore we both chose to include white in the costume. I softened the image using curves in Photoshop, making the image look very vintage and dreamy, inspired by the works of Kitty Gallannaugh.

Life Drawing.

This is an observational drawing I created in college. Using various brusho dyes, I created a ground to work on top of, using a dripping technique and being gestured by splashing it on the page. I then roughly sketched out the figure in chalk once the ground had dried, and then worked on top using Indian Ink, which I also dripped. I liked creating the ground for this drawing as it gives more depth to the simple line drawing of the figure that I did. This piece of work is A3 in size.

The Destruction Of Nature.

These images were two of the finals I had produced for my outdoor, public, exhibition for BEAM. After working with different techniques of damaging film, I decided to physically burn the image. The images were taken in my final shoot, using darkroom processes, and working with multiple exposures inspired by Maria Louceiro. The images were displayed on a tree in Wakefield Orangery gardens, surrounded by fairy lights for illumination. The concept was to show how the Orangery was disappearing amongst the constructive, building sites of Wakefield.

Acidic Substance

These images were experimental work that was for my most recent college project. I experimented with acidic substances such as vinegar and lemon juice which I left in for longer than I maybe should have. I decided to only capture simple photographs of nature. This photo is one of my personal favourites out of the select few that came out okay. I created another version which I colour corrected it in Photoshop (right image). I’d never damaged film like this before so it was a new technique that I've enjoyed working in.

Brian Froud - Faerie

Using assorted grey, compact charcoal, and willow charcoal, I drew this image, referencing an illustration created by Brian Froud, on an A3 scale. I roughly sketched it out in pencil then started sketching the tones using the charcoal. Due to the harsh lines, but tonal aspects, this piece relates to the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, but still beholds that dark, fantasy feel of Froud’s work. This drawing expressed the theme I mostly enjoy working with, as well as displays my way of drawing which is gestured and free, rather than controlled.

Scratching on Film.

In my current college project, I'm basing my whole idea on fairies and how they're green home is being taken over by the destruction of construction. This idea links in with the Orangery that we're doing a live brief for and I've been highly influenced on the idea by my favourite childhood film, Ferngully. This image displays an experiment of scratching on film emulsion. I used darkroom processes as a direct link to ‘The Cottingley Fairies’. I feel like the scratching compliments the harsh spikes on the tree and I really liked it.

Heal The Crystal.

Using various sketching pencils I decided to draw from a small image of Kira from 'The DarkCrystal'. A puppet created by artist, Wendy Froud. I've never really done anything like this; I'm usually a more gestured artist and find myself getting frustrated when it comes to more controlled artwork. This A4 drawing was for my most recent project, where I was looking at existing fairy characters to inspire me with my photography. The Project was for the art team, BEAM, which was my first project working for a live panel.

Her Pink Crown.

A London photographer, Kitty Gallannaugh, inspired me to go out and shoot more. Her works are very personal and aren't the typical high fashion photographs.  This is a path I wanted to take and since coming across her work, I've been working on small little projects in my own time, and capturing photographs that aren't as theatrical as I usually do. This image is of my sister, wearing a handmade, pink crown. After experimenting with curves n Photoshop, I created an atmosphere of nostalgia within the image, which is a look I've enjoyed creating since my ‘Keeper Of Memories’ shoot.

Asylum Syndicate.

In my own time, I enjoy creating shoots with my friends they convey meaning or hold theatrical qualities. This was an improvised shoot which was creating in a bathroom, using anything we could find. We splashed fake blood on the walls, wrapped ourselves in bloodstained bandages, and created whacky hair pieces. In Photoshop, I then made the image monochrome and experimented with different blurs to create a different mood to the image.

"The Keeper Of Memories"

This image exhibits one of the many characters I have created for my interpretations project, ‘The Keeper of Memories’. In a world where people become preoccupied with worrying about unnecessary things, my character represents past times via deterioration. Like slipping through an hour glass, her sad expression signifies forgotten memories.
I’ve been heavily influenced by Kirsty Mitchell’s Wonderland series and how each of her characters has their own stories that entwine with one another. I have used photography processes, mixed-media, Digital work, tea-staining, old photographs, story book pages and forgotten keepsakes to create work that evokes a sense of nostalgia.

"The Keeper Of Memories" costume.

This is a costume I constructed for my character, representing lost memories and treasures. I constructed the dress mainly from paper, inspired by Violise Lunn. The dress contains broken jewelry that I collected from people, as well as handmade envelopes and letters which told the love of my Nana and Grandpa before he passed away. I also constructed paper flowers and butterflies, and attached photographs that were processed in the darkroom, and then edited in Photoshop, of personal memories of my Nana and Grandpa. This was to be worn and photographed in my final shoot of the character.

"The Ghost Swift".

In my first Pathway project, I had chosen the word ‘Characteristics’ to work with. Inspired by the photographer, Kirsty Mitchell, I wanted to create my own characters then held their own story. I started by creating a mixed-media collage of her famous image, “The Ghost Swift”. I used media such as pencil, soft pastel, oil pastel, fine liner and ink, and materials such as ripped wallpaper, various paper, book pages, tracing paper and scrap fabrics. Doing this helped me to come up with my own character concepts as well as develop in the use of mixed media.

Storybook Characters: Good

For this image I was experimenting with story book characters, resulting in me creating my own good and bad character to use as the front and back cover of a book for my final. I had developed a liking to using textures and changing the hues to create a surreal mood to the image. Inspired by Tim Walker, I created my own theatrical landscape to shoot in, using balloons and handmade drawings that I hung from trees. I also looked into costume and created some accessories for my characters to determine them as good and bad.

Exploratory.

In the Exploratory unit of Art & Design, I tested with layers and texture in Photoshop with images I had taken for my summer homework, 'Letters In The Landscape'. I used images, K, O, and V, layering them and setting different blending modes giving an overall, graphical image.

Fantasy Landscapes.

I have a solid interest in fantasy, and started experimenting with creating fantasy landscapes in a photography unit. I investigated layering textures in Photoshop, and changing the hues of the texture which resulted in different moods and atmospheres within the image. This image reminds me of a sun bleached photograph because of it’s vivid, harmonious colours and slight over exposure.

Macro Landscapes

In this image, I experimented with macro lenses, creating macro landscapes. For this particular image, I used potpourri my subject. I feel that the use of a macro lens made the image look like an underwater, coral reef. I then produced this image along with other macro landscapes on a small scale which I then attached to a handmade tree to present them in.
